24 May 2005 – HSBC bank workers are to go ahead with a 24-hour strike after talks to settle a dispute about pay broke down. The walk-out, which is scheduled for Friday, will be the first major strike at a British bank for 40 years. Union Amicus said a last-ditch meeting had failed to head off the walk-out by thousands of staff. It said 10% of staff were set to receive no pay rise this year and 45% would get less than inflation. Members had voted by 68% in favour of the walk-out in protest at the imposed pay deal which the union says would lead to a wage cut.

With the union and HSBC still at odds a strike is set for the 27th of May at press time. The union says they are willing to negotiate, while HSBC thinks they are bluffing or wants to ignore the situation. Advocacy organization Household – HSBC Watch says ignoring or denying legal situations is not uncomon at HSBC. Household International denied predatory lending even as they were slapped with a US-wide $484 million predatory lending suit. Their legal department told Mr. Shea (Shea v Household) his claims were without merit, but had to settle for $11 million dollars. Denial is a common trait at HSBC’s legal departments, at least until they get caught. Household even ignored California regulatory findings for three years, until they got caught again.
