AT&T Corp. said Thursday it will unleash the biggest ad campaign in the company’s 120-year history to strengthen its famous brand name. The old Ma Bell was recently acquired by SBC Communications Inc. in a $16 billion deal. SBC, itself once part of the old AT&T, then took on the AT&T name. The new AT&T is now the largest phone company in the United States.

HSBC Bank Plc came under fire for abusing the United States military, primarily through HSBC Finance Corporation which is former predatory lender Household International. Specific complaints of abuse come as no surprise to Household - HSBC Watch consumer advocates. The watchdog organization performs trend analysis, a project that charts detailed complaints over time. “We completely substantiate the claims of those that blew the whistle on HSBC, having validated those claims for over four years” said the group.

The new bankruptcy law requires debtors to come up with a payment plan to satisfy unsecured creditors like the card companies. So how do credit card issuers really look at the newly bankrupt? Radian Guaranty announced Monday results of a recent survey of adults nationwide, of whom two-thirds own their current home and 47% have a home mortgage. The study revealed that 52% of the participants said they were no more than somewhat knowledgeable about the mortgage options available to them at the time they purchased their homes, according to the announcement.

The instability of oil prices doesn’t just affect how often we drive. Home heating costs are expected to skyrocket throughout the winter. Households heated by natural gas are expected to pay $350 a month this year, an increase of 48 percent from 2004. Homeowners using oil for heating will be paying $378, an increase of 32 percent. The average American may be spending 20 percent of their take-home pay on energy costs this year, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
