PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill., March 29 /PRNewswire/ — HSBC - North America announced today the appointment of Lee Whatcott as chief financial officer of HSBC Auto Finance, effective immediately. Whatcott will lead the financial accounting and management efforts for the business, which provides auto financing through thousands of active auto dealer relationships and direct-to- consumer channels. He will work out of HSBC Auto Finance’s headquarters in San Diego.

HSBC declined to comment on whether such plans entailed layoffs of its British staff, but Chief Operating Officer Alan Jebson said HSBC would save about $20,000 for every job it moved to Asia. HSBC runs four service centers in India, three in China and one in Malaysia, one in the Philippines and one in Sri Lanka. Vietnam could be its next outpost, where there is a high population of English and French speakers.

Workers of HSBC and former predatory lender Household International may face oppressive financial problems of their own in the future. Faced with high gasoline prices and huge home heating costs, these workers may have a hard time paying their own bills. Why? Their jobs are going offshore, mostly to India. HSBC announced on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 that it already has 13,000 workers in call centers around Asia. But chief operating officer Alan Jebson said he would be very surprised if less than 25,000 people were working in them over the next three years.

One of the biggest drawbacks of financing a vehicle with HSBC Auto Finance is timely release of the title, according to watchdog organization Household - HSBC Watch. One customer recently said “I bought my 2003 Suzuki Intruder motorcycle from Escape motors in September 2003. The account was started with GECF, and later transferred to HSBC April 15, 2004. I paid the remaining balance in full by October 29, 2004 and have yet to receive my title. HSBC claims to have sent it, yet I have not received my title. Today’s date is March 15, 2005. I want my title.”
