Most sued and former executive of HSBC and CEO of predatory lender Household International William F. Aldinger III once boasted that his company ‘invented tax refund loans’ - and they are proud of it. Household, and later HSBC, partnered with H&R Block. H&R Block CEO Mark Ernst appeared eager to turn the page on a flurry of disappointing corporate news. Speaking at the firm’s annual shareholders meeting in Kansas City this week, the head of the nation’s largest tax preparer outlined a fee-reduction plan that implicitly responded to critics who have charged that refund-anticipation loans unfairly siphon high interest charges from millions of low-income Americans.

Senators in Actress Jane Fonda’s home state of Georgia voted 38-1 against a resolution praising Fonda for charity donations and work to combat teenage pregnancy. Many in the US still see her as a traitor after a trip to the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, in 1972. Republican Senator John Douglas said Fonda, who picked up the nickname “Hanoi Jane”, was “guilty of treason”.

AT&T Corp. said Thursday it will unleash the biggest ad campaign in the company’s 120-year history to strengthen its famous brand name. The old Ma Bell was recently acquired by SBC Communications Inc. in a $16 billion deal. SBC, itself once part of the old AT&T, then took on the AT&T name. The new AT&T is now the largest phone company in the United States.

Household International and HSBC’s former director and Chairman was William Aldinger. He is also on the board of directors of AT&T. His total suits and settlements just reached a new all-time high before 2005 ends. Read the reasons for this latest Aldinger related settlement, as detailed below. Facing the rising tide of dissent over purportedly racist lending practices this summer (2005), Wells Fargo head Richard Kovacevich told Bloomberg news: “We are responsible lenders, and we price for risk; we don’t price for race. We don’t do predatory lending. And the American consumer is better off that we take that risk. We just have to get paid for it.”
