As many as 8,000 employees of Catholic Health System have been unable to get their paychecks through direct deposit this morning due to the ongoing computer problems at HSBC Bank USA. Do you have direct deposit of your paycheck or retirement check at HSBC? There is a chance you may not have access to your deposit because of a huge computer meltdown at HSBC. Catholic Health System is a large hospital system, located in Buffalo New York, right in HSBC’s home town. But direct deposits weren’t posted as of this morning. The problem is an indicator for many people, and it is a situation unheard of in the United States. Perhaps it is time to move your direct deposit.

Catholic Health System pays employees by direct deposit to HSBC on Thursdays. Computer problems at HSBC started last Sunday. That is no typo — yes, last Sunday. Today is Thursday. What will happen to Friday direct deposits? Time will tell, but the backlash from this will haunt HSBC for a while.

With the high cost of fuel, groceries, and utilities many people need their paychecks now. Subprime resets simply compound the problem. But this is not the first time HSBC has had computer problems that effected customers:

  • In April 2008 HSBC lost details on 370,000 customers
  • In March 2008 HSBC tried to reassure customers after letting a secure certificate expire for one of HSBC’s websites.
  • In March and April of 2008 HSBC’s e-payments system failed twice in two weeks. **
  • In December 2007 HSBC debited customer accounts two and three times for one payment. A computer glitch was cited as the cause.

**Merchants also report HSBC is failing to keep retailers informed about the latest problem, repeating a complaint cited at the time of the last outage.
