HSBC is biggest loser today

HSBC PLC leads the list of top losers so far today and is now at $76.87, down $2.44 (-3.08%) on volume of 1,013,233 shares traded. Part of the problem for HSBC comes from the IMF, which said subprime issues will continue and may actually get worse. HSBC became of of the leading subprime lenders in the United States when the bank bought Household International in 2003. Other factors include changes in HSBC U.S. operations, known as optimization, but HSBC has not said publically what those changes entail. The bank recently shut down their automobile financing division, and transferred some business to Canada.

The U.S. subsidiary of HSBC Holdings PLC spent $660,000 in the second quarter lobbying the federal government on mortgage lending and credit card rules, according to a recent disclosure form.
