HSBC and activist investor organizaiton Knight-Vinke have been challenging each other for quite some time. This past weekend Knight-Vinke said “‘The dismissive comments in your letter conveyed a worrying degree of complacency. I hope this is just a matter of tone and not of substance.” The same United States division of HSBC that concerns Knight-Vinke uses the same dismissive tone to talk with customers on a daily basis. It is most certainly the tone most often used with customers, be they mortgage, credit card, or auto loan customers. A quick look at our complaints blog verifies our position.

Knight Vinke wants HSBC to sell, spin-off or otherwise ‘ring-fence’ HSBC Finance Corporation, but Green told reporters that to walk away from the division would leave bondholders high and dry. “This is as unreasonable as it is unrealistic. Walking away from it would be unthinkable and irresponsible” Green said. Here at Household - HSBC Watch we studied HSBC and their former Household International division from the day HSBC bought it, and well before that when we monitored Household International. It is our opinion that the division would be bankrupt or out of business. It is also possible that the division is unable to support its $150 billion of debt.
