HFC and Beneficial Finance - Name Liability
As the subprime market declines and loan losses mount, third parrty mortgage brokers are having a tough time of it. Like many realtors, mortgage brokers are unemployed but don’t know it yet. Fired by companies that once funded them, mortgage brokers are casualties of risk management. Lenders like HSBC and Wells Fargo can control risk if the potential borrower walks in to a brick and mortar location.
Years ago, Household International, Household Finance (HFC) and Beneficial Finance would just cheat you face to face. As a result the United States saw the largest predatory lending settlement ever, and these clowns still hold the record. Ameriquest is in second place. But subprime mortgage lending is on the skids, HSBC has huge losses, and many subprime lenders are bankrupt or out of business. Logic tells us that eliminating outside vendors such as mortgage brokers is a good idea.
The HFC and Beneficial Finance names are a liability, at least in the United States, and perhaps overseas as Internet savvy borrowers find hundereds of negative articles in any Google search. In a classic sense of “what goes around comes back around” HSBC cannot fully trust outside brokers, but customers and potential customers cannot trust HSBC’s brick and mortar locations.
Recently HSBC announced that they are dropping two tax refund loan programs. HSBC should have dropped refund lending all together if they wanted to eliminate name liability. HSBC is also the subject of reports alleging credit card payments are held for days before payment is applied to the cardholder’s account. Shea vs Household, which was paid by HSBC, shows this practice dates as far back as 1994. HSBC should process payments like all other reputable financial institutions.
HSBC’s name liability is their own doing. HSBC purchased Household International almost five years ago, but failed miserably in marketing, image, and public perception. They are addicated to a cheap fast dollar like a heroin, crack, or crystal meth addict is addicated to drugs. Apparently HSBC just cannot quit.
