Friend of Predatory Lenders Bob Ney Incarcerated
WASHINGTON - Former Ohio Congressman Bob Ney was sentenced Friday to 30 months of incarceration for his role in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal. The Justice Department had asked for a term of 27 months in prison. Ney, the only member of Congress charged in the scandal, pleaded guilty last October to conspiracy and making false statements.
According to consumer watchdog organization Household - HSBC Watch, Ney was a friend of Household International and HSBC. Ney lobbied to overturn state and local anti-predatory lending laws and was in favor of new bankruptcy laws. “Ney was so anti-consumer and we wrote to him asking if he forgot those who elected him” said Household - HSBC Watch. “Needless to say we never heard from him but we correctly predicted his demise two years before it happened. This guy was not the sharpest knife in the drawer.”
