A friend of predatory lender Household International and HSBC Representative Bob Ney, an Ohio Republican entangled in the corruption scandal centered on the former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, announced Monday that he would abandon his bid for re-election. The Justice Department has signaled for months that criminal charges against Mr. Ney, and possibly other Republican members of Congress and aides who were close to Mr. Abramoff, were only a matter of time.

North Carolina State Treasurer Richard Moore appeared on the CNBC show “Squawk Box” on Thursday morning. Moore used his television appearance to send a message to H&R Block about its high-interest, short-term loans, his office said. Moore is working with the Community Reinvestment Association of North Carolina to end the loans H&R Block offers to borrowers for the maximum amount of their expected federal tax refund.

Financial services union Amicus has condemned HSBC’s plans to cut 72 jobs at finance departments in the UK and move the work to its offshore centres. HSBC is offshoring work from London, Birmingham and Southampton, including over 30 managerial positions.
