WASHINGTON — Watch what you sign if you have your taxes done by a commercial tax preparer. The Internal Revenue Service is proposing a change in privacy protections that consumer groups say would allow your financial information or even copies of your return to be sold to data brokers and marketers. Currently those companies can only sell information from an individual’s return to groups directly affiliated with the company and only if you give written permission for that information to be shared. The new revisions would expand that pool of customers.

Predatory lender HSBC Finance Corp. once backed the K-Mart credit card, but not any more. It appears K-Mart signed with HSBC (Household International) because the troubled retailer needed every dime the could milk from customers. Now it appears they still have customer problems.

A woman reported a recent experience with Compass Bank in Alabama. Normally Household – HSBC Watch does not publish information unless it pertains to HSBC, theri personnel, or former executives. In this case, however, it appears as though Compass Bank took an idea from predatory lender Household International. Regarding high fees and unwarranted charges, we thought we would pass this on.
