IRS Would Let Tax Preparers Sell Your Returns
WASHINGTON — Watch what you sign if you have your taxes done by a commercial tax preparer. The Internal Revenue Service is proposing a change in privacy protections that consumer groups say would allow your financial information or even copies of your return to be sold to data brokers and marketers. Currently those companies can only sell information from an individual’s return to groups directly affiliated with the company and only if you give written permission for that information to be shared. The new revisions would expand that pool of customers.
IRS commissioner Mark Everson said the new rules would “strengthen taxpayer protection by clarifying the consent standard.” A hearing on the proposal is set for April 4.
If your return is prepared by H&R Block your information is shared with predatory lender HSBC through their Household International - Taxmasters high interest loan program affiliation. Both are under investigation with pending federal racketeering charges. Block was recently charged with fraud in a related case. It’s time for concerned Americans to write to the IRS.
