The Advocacy Team Remembers

It seems only fitting to write about a subject slightly off topic from our normally blogging efforts. It seems like yesterday, but it was three years ago this month that we lost a sister and dear friend to inflammatory breast cancer. As we reflect upon it one must stress the importance of MRI’s as a second opinion when dense breast tissue causes mammograms to be inaccurate. To learn more about breast cancer visit the American Cancer Society website. The Inflammatory Breast Cancer Memorial Site remembers many who fought the good fight.

Debbie always kept her finances in order and never had to worry about some of life’s issues. A new email from one of my children, about another loved one with breast cancer, startled me earlier this week. It is, therefore, a time to reflect on how one might not notice that they didn’t get a monthly statement, as we fight life’s bigger battles. Perhaps this is not the place and time for me to address predatory lending issues and shady billing tactics. But just like setting the alarm clock at night, and hearing the alarm clock in the morning, we rely on visual stimulation and visual clues to keep us on track each day.

Suffice it to say there are times when life’s big issues take center stage. A single mother with breast cancer, with three children looking to her for daily comfort, should not be vulnerable to life’s financial predators. There are bigger issues to face, important battles to fight, and decisions to be made. As I urge women to get a second opinion about mammograms, I also urge financial institutions to get a second opinion about their social responsibility and the way in which they conduct daily business. All of HSBC Finance Corporation’s customers are not lairs who ‘just didn’t pay their bill’. Some have more issues pending, while others are preparing to touch the face of God and sit by His side.
