BRITAIN’S biggest bank has slapped a ban on rival customers at peak times. HSBC has put up signs in its 1,500 branches warning that other account holders will not be served between 11am and 2pm.
It insisted yesterday that the unprecedented move was meant only to improve the service for its own 10m customers. But critics said it was effectively a way of forcing those in areas where there is no choice of banks into taking out an account with HSBC. Even if they arrive outside the forbidden time zone, they still have to pay a £5 fee for every transaction such as cashing a personal cheque or paying a bill.
