Art Van and Best Buy Sales People - Errors

Who is to blame and who bears the responsibility if a sales person tells you something that is not true? Take this actual consumer report as an example:
“Tom Wheelis told me in no uncertain terms that my total cost of the purchase was $1591.02 and no payments were due until one year from date of purchase.” This related to an Art Van account destined for collection. At Best Buy, the same applies. The sales person tells the customer “It is no interest and no payments for 12 months” only to find out that by the second month you are headed for collections and a stain on your credit report.

These complaints are about HSBC and HSBC Finance Corporation - the old predatory Household International. Short of getting the sales person or a store manager to write the information for you, signing and dating it, who bears the responsibility if the sales person was mistaken, untrained, or just plain lying? Oviously the customer will ultimately pay the price, but if it is a trend at HSBC intelligent minds suggest staying away from the source of the problem.
