Sam’s Club and HSBC Hurt Costco Profits

Sam’s Club aggressively cut prices to win over coveted small-business customers, heaping pressure on Costco’s profits through early 2005. Costco, on the other hand, signed a deal with former predatory lender Household International, now part of HSBC, to handle their private lable Costco credit card. “We suspect that Sam’s Club put a bigger crimp in Costco’s profits than many realize, thus Costco signed a credit card contract with a predator” said Household - HSBC Watch consumer advocates. “That usually happens when a business is troubled or needs every penny of profit, thus sacrificing integrity to meet market expectations.”
