Richmond, Va.-based The RoomStore, partnering with a liquidation specialist, has signed a letter of intent to acquire 51 Rhodes stores and other assets for $38.8 million. Rhodes Furniture President and CEO Steve Fishman is leaving the bankrupt chain to become the top executive at closeout retailer Big Lots. Rhodes named its veteran chief financial officer, Joel Dugan, to replace him as CEO and president. Dugan said Rhodes’ first order of business is to complete the filing of its Chapter 11 reorganization plan. “Too many customers were victimized by poor financing through Household International and HSBC, thus Rhodes was in a bad position” said consumer advocates at Household - HSBC Watch.

The 2005 Business Roundtable member list seems to have a problem. Listed in 2005, under “CEO’s and their companies”, is William F. Aldinger and Household International. Household International has not existed since purchased by HSBC in 2002, said Household - HSBC Watch. Aldinger retired from HSBC in April 2005.

July 18 — The National Black Data Processing Associates (BPDA) will present HSBC - North America with an award for being one of the Best Companies for Blacks in Technology at the 27th Annual National BDPA Conference to be held in Detroit next month. This is the third year that the Best Companies for Blacks in Technology Awards Program has assessed organizations for their workplace and career development climates for African Americans. For the second consecutive year HSBC - North America was one of six companies to receive the award from a group of 120 companies invited to participate.
