Now that UMUC (University of Maryland) allowed former predatory lender Household International in the door, we are starting to see the bad effects, said consumer advocates at Household - HSBC Watch. HSBC purchased Household International but problems with predatory lending remain, according to the group. Here are some quotes:
“I have an account with HSBC Retail Services. I’m supposed to be co-signer on a loan for my daughter on a motorcycle that she surprised her husband with after his return from Iraq. (He is in the military in Ft. Campbell, KY.) I ended up being the only name on the contract. I have never received a copy of it, and still cannot to this day.”
“They have been rude to my daughter and me over the phone. One case recently had my daughter in tears. After telling the woman the status of her husband’s deployment over seas, and wanting to work this out before he left, she was told that “they didn’t want to hear any military story”.
“Got very rude customer service. They are unwilling to clear anything up with us. Was told that I was using my husband’s deployment over seas as a crutch.”
“Household - HSBC Watch protested this alliance when it was first announced. We stand by our record of knowing HSBC, Household International, and our statement that UMUC sold out to a predator” said the group.
