HSBC North America Breach of Card Security
The Wall Street Journal reported that it HSBC taken a $6.2-million charge for possible losses relating to the breach. Polo Ralph Lauren was allegedly responsible for a breach that exposed the data of as many as 180,000 customers of HSBC North America, holding General Motors-branded MasterCards. HSBC has advised possible victims to replace cards, a costly undertaking.
Consumer advocates at Household - HSBC Watch said the breach is ironic since HSBC North America (which is the former predatory lender Household International) usually tells customers that the customers are at fault, their bank is at fault, or perhaps the US Postal Service is at fault, and then HSBC charges the customer for late fees and extra interest - when in reality their payment was actually received on time and no extra fees and charges were warranted. “Nothing changed at Household International and HSBC has been unable or unwilling to control the predatory Household International operation” said Household - HSBC Watch.
