My first full time job was with HSBC - working in the international section of the bank in London’s Square Mile. That was a real growing up experience for me - at the age of 18, moving from the province of NW England to live and work in the big smoke. It wasn’t long before I realised that the bank had many slaves. Employees sold themselves into slavery. If you worked for the bank then you could get a cheap mortgage so instead of getting a small house with a low mortgage, people would buy a larger house, and have a large mortgage even though it was cheaper than everyone else’s. You know what? They were trapped. They’d lost their freedom. They couldn’t move from that bank because if they did they’d loose their cheap mortgage and loose their house. People would complain about their work, and when I asked why they didn’t move out, they would say - “Well, I can’t you, see, I’d lose the mortgage.’ they were trapped and they’d lost their freedom.
