HSBC plans to expand in Asia’s fledgling consumer finance market next year by using the techniques of Household International, the US company it acquired for $13bn last year, to attract lower-income customers. In an interview with the Financial Times, an HSBC representative said consumer finance lending to “sub-prime” customers who are rejected by banks because of their credit history would be launched in one or two Asian countries at first before expanding more broadly.
