A lawyer was arrested after he took his desktop personal computer to a repair technician at a Best Buy store. After seeing digital files with such titles as “Lolita.fk01.jpg” and “teensteensteens.jpg,” the technician suspected child pornography and called police.
Is this a violation of your privacy? Does an employee of Best Buy need to search your hard drive for pictures and documents? How about online banking records, Quicken, or Microsoft Money?
As a former computer sales person and technician I must say the answer is “NO.” Although the employee helped catch a child pornographer, the articles also indicates that Best Buy technicians snoop through your data and violate your privacy. Beware.
We report it but you decide. Comments are welcomed. For the article on the arrest of C. Tom Zaratti, 60, of Houston see this link.
