The consumer may close an account but the account is not reported to the credit reporting agencies as closed.

Action Taken: I have written 2 letters requesting the account to be updated - this account I closed years ago and it is still reflected as 'open'. It has been two weeks since my most recent request, and I have not received a confirmation letter. I specifically asked HSBC to send me a confirmation letter immediately and to resolve this issue. Please help me with this matter.

You must write to Household (HSBC now) to request that your account be closed. Calling does not protect your rights. Specifically demand that the account shall be shown as closed at the consumer's request. Send all mail to HSBC with delivery confirmation from the postal service. Otherwise the ignore your request or you have no proof of your request. See more about this specific subject in our FAQ. If they continue to report incorrectly see our "Your Money" page. Both [ages are available from the main menu of HouseholdWatch.com

My account was closed in 2002 but reports 26 late payments in 2004 causing serious drop in FICO score.

Sue them, they are ruining your credit.

Check your inquiries. Household loves to keep pulling credit files long after an account is closed.
