Topic Title: Best Buy account comes back to haunt me

Retail Services is seeking to recover money on an account that I have never opened. At one time, my ex-wife and I had opened an account with them. My ex-wife was deemed responsible for this account via our divorce decree. Some 3-4 years after our divorce, when the balance on the account was 0.00, she made two purchases totaling approx. 2,900 dollars. Soon after making these purchases, she filed for bankruptcy. Several months later, I received a bill in the mail stating that I had a past due balance on an account I wasn't even aware of (they had already sent in reports to the credit agencies reporting my delinquency).

The only "proof" of it being my account that they were able to send me was the original application which we filled out, which contained a completely different account number than the one they are now billing me for. After numerous discussions with their fraud department, they maintain that she reported the card lost or stolen, thus the change in account numbers. I've asked for proof of this several times, or any other documentation related to the sale of these goods, the issuance of new cards (which I did not receive) or a request for a name change by her on the account, only to never receive a call back or mailing.
