Topic Title: 1-800-395-2274 is HSBC
Yesterday 4/13/05 I received 5 phone calls from a computer that said, "Please hold on for some important information", so I did. Then a person came on and asked for "Jane". The calls started at 8:00am PST from this # (800)395-2274 from 5 different people! I do not even have any accounts with them, but they kept insisting that my home phone # belongs to "Jane Smith" and that I was lying when I told them, I'm not Jane, I don't know a Jane Smith, no Jane has ever lived here & that this phone# is NOT Jane Smith's phone# no matter what she told them! I asked them to Remove my phone# from their data/records, and to never call here again. I repeated this same message to calls 2,3,&4. When I got the 5th call, I told the woman about calls 1-4, I told her to put me on "Their Do Not Call List" & to stop calling me & harassing me!
I do have an account with these people, and it is truly the worst! Regardless of what you send them, they will still call and harass you all month long! That is until your account is at zero but will still call no matter how much you owe them (they called me for a total of $7.38 once)! Even when I was making regular monthly payments, they still called! I feel bad for those of who they harass without accounts with them. They call me at home at any time, any day, from 6 am - 11:30 pm! (11:38 was latest they ever called.) Not to mention they even found out my cell phone number! I must say though, call ID is a WONDERFUL THING! GOD BLESS THE PEOPLE WHO CAME UP WITH IT!!! These people are a joke and someone should step in and do something, maybe, hmmm, our "wonderful" government that we are supposed to love and keep giving money to?! The money that goes to a war to protect someones family investment and make the wealthy get wealthier!

See Section 804 through 806
The collector should not discuss Jane Smith's account with anyone other than Jane Smith. Identifying the person that answers the telephone as someone other than Jane Smith should end the call.
If the collector calls the person that answers the call a liar, in my mind, it constitutes abuse.
The collector should call only at reasonable times, 08:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Any calls outside the parameter constitutes abuse.
You must request in writing that the calls stop. Write the letter, mail it with properly afixed postage, and keep a copy for your files. If nothing else, for 37 cents, you get to make HSBC employees work, too. We highly recommend delivery confirmation. It costs a couple of $, but gee, you know it was delivered and when. Print the verification page at the USPS site and keep it with your copy of the letter.
Interesting note about caller ID. Collectors have it, too. So if you do not want them to call you back at that number, DO NOT use that phone to return calls. You will only frustrate yourself, irritate your employer, family members, and friends if you use their telephone. The collectors will try and call you back at that number.
Yes, we have a government that controls nearly everything and a specific agency for every purpose. Read the regulation and file your complaint with the agency referenced for complaints. No sense in letting the bureacrats sit around like the "Maytag" repairman, give them an opportunity to earn their pay (even though I believe they are actually kept busy in their understaffed offices, the bureacrats, not the Maytag repairman as seen on TV).

We monitor customer trends for possible violations of Regulation Z and other possible illegal actions.
