Like the rest of honest folks out there, you work to the bones and aquired the American dreams so the greedy banks can squander billions and give us grief. I have a good job after my career in the military, work hard and pay my bills on time for 30+ years, then suddenly in 2004 I have a heart attack, and this is where everything I worked hard for starting to crumble.
I was behind on my mortgage and auto payment, but I went ahead and pay what I could on my mortgage note. We even went without food and living on can foods that left over from the last hurricanes. I’ve sent HSBC the mortgage payments with a few hundred dollars less then a full payment just to show good faith. I finally got through to their hardship workout department and it is here where everything get murky.
To qualify for the hardship, I had to jump through hoops with the paper trails that they insisted had to be done. I complied with their request and thought that my 3 months of payments in good faith would show, and assure HSBC that we are not a dead beat, and we very much want our home and are hoping they show some compassion and lend a hand. But here comes the good part. After a month, hours on the phone and mailing expense, we received a certified letter saying HSBC is in the process of reviewing our account for a possible foreclosure.
The reason they give us was we were 60 days behind, and all of those payments that we have making were not posted to our account so now $1300 became $5467 because of late fees and interest. We finally requested a loan modification to give us some breathing room at the recommendation of the counselor from HUD. Well, HSBC finally approved a loan modification and reduced interest rates from 9.5 to 5.25 for only six months, but with a stipulation that we must make a payment of $1111.00 to qualify for the hardship.
All I wanted is a loan modification for the life of my account, and pay my debts. I want to make sure my home is secure for my family before my time runs out. As with my health, I hope this will be resolved before my time runs out. Thanks for listening.”
