KP in Mississippi sent this short but alarming report: “Cannot access my online account nor have I received my bill, but when I call and told HSBC it is due tomorrow I will now have to pay $15 rush fee, which is robbery.”

If this is your first bill ever and you didn’t receive your statement the fee can be waived. However, if it isn’t there’s a certain degree of responsibility on the customer. I know it may seem like a lot to ask to track all your statements but it can save you money in future. They don’t have any grace period but if the payment is only a couple of days late and it’s the first late fee they will usually waive it and if not you can always try a supervisor. My best advise when calling these agents would be to just be careful with the words you use. If you get on the phone demanding things it is not going to happen easily, if you have a firm but pleasant tone you have a better chance of getting fees waived. I worked in customer service for a long time, thankfully not anymore because people love taking out all their frustration on you and it ain’t pleasant.
GM GOLD card does charge a 15 fee for direct pay from your bank account. I was floored by this as I had been driving wife to cancer treatment for six plus weeks. My wife noticed my GM payment envelope with stamp on it and merely not mailed on our table under a pile of junk mail, which I accept the consequences of allowing things to overwhelm me. I have been a GM Gold card member/account holder for over ten plus years. I opened the envelop suspecting it was a few days late, and it was 8 days late. I called GM cardmember services immediately, explained the situation, and; I was told I would have to pay 15 bucks for a payment directly out of my checking account. I was not told about a 29 buck late charge that posted the day after the due date on a total balance of 117. I have never heard of a late fee by any decent card company for one mistake of 8 days in ten plus years, plus a 29 buck late fee.
AMEX does not play GM’s game. I have had Amex since 70. Sadly, my mistake with GM cost 44 bucks or over 40% in a mere 8 days.I am through with GM.
