WH in North Carolina said: “Back during Sept/Oct of 2008, I requested a payoff amount for two of my credit cards under HSBC control. One of the cards was from Guitar Center and the other from Office Max. During the call, I was given two payoff amounts and further given dates for their expiration. I paid the Office Max card off before that date and requested the card to be closed and was told that it was done.
Also as an aside, I got this card in June/July of 2008 and used it ONE TIME to purchase office supplies and did that the day I signed up for the card. I NEVER received a card in the mail, but I was receiving the bills properly. I even called and requested a card on two separate occasions and one never came. I checked with the post office and there was no record of any problems. Furthermore, I was receiving and still do receive my Guitar Center bill without fail.
In February of 2009, I received a call from HSBC that I had an outstanding balance of $180+. They explained to me that there was a late fee that had been assessed my account prior to me paying it off and that I had accrued interest on that amount since Sept/Oct 2008. No matter what I tried to explain to them about the card being closed, they told me that it was not and that the charges were valid.
HSBC told me that if I had paid another $10/20 that this would have taken care of the issue. They stated that I had spoken with three different people about this amount and refused to pay this to close my account and bring it to currrent. They also stated that the day that I called to pay off the card, I was given the opportunity to pay a reduced amount of the late fees to avoid further penalties. That never took place.
No one called me until February and I received no further statements past the date when I requested the card be closed and paid the amount I was told to pay. To this date I have not received any further statements, nor letters from HSBC.
The day in February, I agreed to pay HSBC $68 and some change to just close the account. I was given a confirmation number and was asked to stay on the phone long enough to make sure that the payment by phone had gone through. I was told that it did go through.
Now, several months later, I receive another call from HSBC (May 4, 2009) and I am being told that the payment did not clear the bank and that I now owe them $110 and not to mention all of the bad marks that have been placed on my Credit Report.
On this occasion, I attempted to explain the situation all over again and the gentleman on the line refused to listed to anything that I had to say. I explained that I had not received any bill or letters and his response was the same as everyone else. They have been sent and he confirmed my mailing address. Then he blamed it on the post office and told me that the charges were valid and that I was required to pay them.
This is a nightmare, because I have not used this card since last summer (2008) and have not had any desire to use this card. Heck! I thought that this card was closed as of Sept/Oct of 2008 and here I am paying on an amount that no one ever told me about and one that I have yet to see. HSBC Commercial is messed up and needs to go away.”
