HSBC Middle East apparently missed its own deadline for issuing debit cards to 400,000 UAE customers. It’s not as if debt cards are a mystery or difficult to control from a software standpoint. None the less HSBC Bank Middle East will delay distributing debit cards to its 400,000 customers, bank officials confirmed yesterday.
HSBC Middle East, the only large retail bank in the country not to offer debit cards, declined to comment on the reasons for the delay or the details of the program. It appears as though employees are using the cards during the test period which has apparently been extended.
HSBC now claims a target date in the next quarter. Thimal Perera, the regional head of direct channels and cards, said: “We started with Qatar and Bahrain and will be extending this to our client base in UAE in this last quarter. In the UAE, we are in the pilot stage and have issued cards to our staff, who are currently enjoying this facility and at the same time giving valuable feedback.”
