Finn M.W. Caspersen , head of Beneficial Finance for two decades, amassed a fortune, giving away tens of millions of dollars to charities and becoming a key backer of the Republican Party in New Jersey and across the country.

But Caspersen’s life of privilege, lavish parties and noble causes ended Monday near a golf course he helped build in this coastal community, where he owned a summer home. The former head of Beneficial Corp. of Peapack-Gladstone apparently committed suicide and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Police found Caspersen’s body, dressed in a button-down shirt and slacks, shortly after 3 p.m. Labor Day behind an office building he co-owned in this southern Rhode Island town near the Connecticut state line. A gun was found near his body, Westerly police Capt. Edward St. Clair said.
