HSBC Bank USA has named a Bonaventure University graduate to one of its highest local posts. Andy Ireland has been appointed HSBC’s executive vice president and regional president for upstate retail banking. He will oversee retail and small-business banking for HSBC’s 200-branch network in upstate New York.
Ireland replaces Paulette Crooke, who was recently named head of personal finance services for HSBC Bank International.
Andy Ireland probably prefers actual banking to the subprime side of the bank, like HSBC Finance. On the other hand Andy Ireland is probably hoping for decent computer software to prevent nightmares like those experienced by HSBC in the past.
2001: An HSBC spokeswoman said that the firm had a problem with its database software that had prevented staff and customers from accessing customer details. Account holders trying to access details online were also left stranded.
Little has changed over the years:
2008: “The problem related to a US SSL certificate that expired on 4 March. The certificate enables us to place security messages on our Business Internet Banking welcome page (for example, warnings of phishing attacks). The issue was identified on the morning of Wednesday, 5 March, and the new certificate was installed at 5pm,” an HSBC spokesman explained.
Also 2008: “HSBC Bank USA suffered more than just a computer crash last week, some customers say: It also suffered damage to its image and reputation in their eyes.”
Let’s hope Andy Ireland knows how to keep his distance from unhapppy HSBC credit card holders and subprime borrowers in foreclosure. Of course, that is the darker side of HSBC isn’t it?
Of course Andy can always say, “The head HSBC Gods in London already said Houshold was a disaster for HSBC so I will not debate the subject at this time. It has nothing to do with real banking.”
