The issue is mandatory binding arbitration. Capital One, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase agreed to remove a requirement for binding arbitration from future contracts. HSBC has not agreed.

HSBC Headquarters is moving. The Buffalo News reported that HSBC North America Holdings will move its legal headquarters from Illinois back to New York City in January, as the British banking giant refocuses its U. S. strategy on basic banking and credit cards, not consumer finance. There must be some advantage for HSBC.

HSBC is not making friends in the United Kingdom, nor is HSBC very popular with people in the city of York. HSBC is abandoning a £300 million (approximately $491 Million USD) plan to build a new data center in York.

Every misstep (a mistake in judgment or action) and misdeed (improper or wicked or immoral behavior) usually comes with a price tag. When financial institutions push limits or intent of the law they do so after considering the risk. Home loans and refinancing that even bankers classified as “toxic”, combined with statements like “A person would have to be an idiot to take that kind of loan”, set the stage for the financial crisis.
