"My purchase 1996 was $1298.75, and to date I paid more than $4554.00, including late fees, interest and finance charges. Due to some life changes through the years, we had some late payments. I was laid off my job of 11 years in Aug. 2004. I called and asked HSBC for a settlement, since I was getting a severance package and my vacation was paid out (3 weeks). HRS told me to write a letter, I did and was denied. However, throughout my loan, I received letters telling my to call, and that they had programs that may assist me, but they never did.

In March 2005, I was fed up. I called Consumer Affairs, was told to contact all 3 credit bureaus, request copies and dispute the debt. I did and the bureaus concluded the debt was valid. On 3/1/05 I filed a complaint with FTC and on 3/3/05 filed a complaint with State of California Attorney General. The FTC said to file with Comptroller of Currency. On May 20, 2005, I sent letters of complaint to the Better Business Bureau in Rockford Illinois, Attorney General's Office in Sacramento California, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Houston Texas, Barbara Boxer in Washington DC, Diane Feinstein in Washington DC, Mike Thompson in Washington DC, and the Federal Trade Commission-online. No one could help me.

The Comptroller of the Currency said to file with the FTC, as they did not regulate the bank because it did not have an NA in the name, but it did. Household Retail made our life miserable. We had repeated phone calls, more than one a day many times, were harassed and yelled at. Then they told the offers would have been void, and on 3/16/04 Sonia, a manager, suggested we file for bankruptcy (her words). I was referred to Debt Management when I would not give them permission to give my personal info to HRS. HSBC could not approve a request for a payment program. Repeated calls of harassment and threats of action continued from Household Retail, HRS, HSBC, Household Bank (SB) N.A.

I asked them to stop calling, and was told they would continue to call and they did. I finally wrote a letter and told them not to call. Then I received a letter from them which said they sold the account to Sherman Financial. I received a letter from NES, as they were the collection company for Sherman, and now from NAFS. I had two accounts, but a third account was created by Retail Services (HRS) called 'fees charged', and I was being charged late fees and finance charges on that as well."

(This report was sent by DC in California)
