Topic Title: HSBC Account Closed After Complaining
When Katherine Sheasby unknowingly became overdrawn on her current account, she found herself in a cycle of charges that meant a year later she owed £575 to HSBC.
Miss Sheasby, 27, decided to join the ranks of people fighting back against bank charges, and successfully reclaimed £520.
But several weeks later she received a letter from HSBC stating that her account was being closed for 'commercial reasons'. Despite numerous phone calls she was offered no explanation. Miss Sheasby told This is Money she strongly suspects that her account was closed because she claimed back her charges.
Her situation was made all the more complicated because she has relocated to the Netherlands from London at the end of June and her student loan is with HSBC. She was forced to make alternative arrangements to pay off her student loan from the Netherlands, which is difficult and expensive because she is living overseas and does not have another British bank account.
Miss Sheasby is angry that HSBC have no offered explanation for the account closure. 'I had no choice but to accept the closure of my account and then hassle them to ensure they were still able to collect my graduate loan payments from a Dutch bank or otherwise,' she told This is Money.
HSBC admitted that it had been too hasty in closing down Ms Sheasby's account with no explanation but denied the decision was taken because she claimed back her bank charges. A spokesperson said it was because she had 'abused' her overdraft facility. Her account has since been reopened.
Earlier this year Alliance & Leicester was exposed for kicking out customers who had reclaimed their bank charges. A spokesperson said it was a 'general policy' of the bank.
